Kagami mochi is a traditional Japanese New Year decoration made with two rice cakes. The kagami mochi is placed in the house on January first. It is then broken and eaten in a Shinto ritual called kagami biraki on the second Saturday or Sunday of January. 2020 is the year of the rat.

Preparation: Remove the mochi from its packaging and place on baking paper. Grill in the oven for a few minutes: as soon as it swells or becomes golden, it is ready to be eaten with for exanple, sweet soy sauce.
You can also put it a few seconds in the microwave with a little water, or fry in the pan.
